Pak Ou Caves
The Pak Ou caves have become a well-known tourist site of Laos, for its originality, historical and its psychic value. The caves are situated approximately 30kms from Luang Prabang, on the Mekong River, opposite the Nam River estuary. There are two main caves: Tham Phum cave and Tham Ting cave.
The caves were formed thousands of years ago and in recent times have attracted Buddhist pilgrims, who have decorated the caves with thousands of Buddhist statues and paraphernalia, over 4000 at last count. It is a pilgrimage site which allows for many different forms of Buddha, standing, laying down and sitting. There are porcelain, wooden and metal statues of which many have been painted red or black.
Pak Ou Cave have been formed by geological tectonics and is rather grandiose limestone cliff faces that can be seen from afar. During the times of the monarchy, the King visited annually during the Water Festival and spent his night in a Royal Pagoda in the Pak Ou village.
Currently tourists can choose between going by road or by boat cruise along the Mekong River, with the majority choosing the later, to observe life of the locals who live there and of course the relaxation on the cruise.
